Darwin Correspondence Project

To W. J. Beal   9 November 1874

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Nov. 9th 74

Dear Sir,

I am much obliged to you for kindly calling my attention to your paper.1 I will try when in London to see a copy, for I did not take in the A. Naturalist, so long ago.2 It is a curious fact that the Humbles did not use the holes whilst the Hive-bees did so.—3

Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | C. Darwin

Footnotes

See letter from W. J. Beal, 22 October 1874, in which Beal mentioned his note ‘The honey-bee gleaning after the oriole’ (Beal 1868).
The earliest issue of American Naturalist in CD’s collection of unbound journals, Darwin Library–CUL, is dated March 1871.

Summary

Thanks WJB for his reference [see 9691]. Is curious fact that the humble bees did not use the pollen, but the hive bees did.
