Darwin Correspondence Project

To Karl Marx   1 October 1873

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Oct 1. 73

Dear Sir

I thank you for the honour which you have done me by sending me your great work on Capital;1 & I heartily wish that I was more worthy to receive it, by understanding more of the deep & important subject of political economy. Though our studies have been so different, I believe that we both earnestly desire the extension of knowledge, & that this in the long run is sure to add to the happiness of mankind.

I remain Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

The first volume of the second edition of Marx’s Das Kapital (Marx 1873) is in the Darwin Library–Down (later volumes were published only after Marx’s death).

Thanks KM for gift of his "great work on Capital" [2d German ed. of Das Kapital]. Wishes he understood more of "the deep & important subject of political Economy".
