I am sorry to say that I have only £46–5s– in the bank, & the two bills of Burn’s are together £1152 I am afraid I must have been shockingly extravagant some how; & very idle not kept accounts so that I could seen how things were going. I only got my pass book this morning or I would have written to you before

Robert Burn was Francis’s tutor at Trinity College, Cambridge, where Francis was an undergraduate from 1866 until 1870, when he received his BA (Admissions to Trinity College, Cambridge 5: 329, Cambridge University calendar 1870, p. xxiv; see also Correspondence vol. 13, letter to Robert Burn, 2 December [1865]). CD recorded a payment to Francis of £115 on 18 October 1870 in his Account books–cash account (Down House MS).
