Darwin Correspondence Project

To the Geological Society of London   12 March [1843]

Down Bromley | Kent

March 12th

Dear Sir

Will you be so good as to send me a line by return of Post, informing me (if you can find out) how many copies of our Proceedings are annually sold. I am particularly anxious to know this soon—1

Believe me | Yours very faithfully | C. Darwin

CD served as a vice-president of the Geological Society in 1843 (see Proceedings of the Geological Society 4 (1842–5): 64). His reason for requesting the number of copies of Proceedings sold is not known. The Annual Report of 1843 lists £18 realised from the sale, but the number of copies is not specified.

Asks how many copies of Proceedings are commonly sold.
