Darwin Correspondence Project

From John Provis   14 July 1842

Holyhead.

14th. July 1842.

Sir,

In compliance with your request I now send you the heights of certain parts of the Holyhead Road as shewn on a Section in my possession.1 The heights are figured in feet & decimals, Oswestry for instance being 428 8/10 fee tabove the base line of the Section. The level line of the Section has been taken from the level of the Road opposite the Hotel at Holyhead, and if you add three feet to each of the heights I have sent you, it will bring them nearly to the level of the several places above high water of Spring Tides.

I have omitted the height of the Village of Bethesda as its name is not given on my Section, and I am inclined to think that the name of Bethesda has been given to the place since the Section was taken.

dear Sir | Your very obdt Servant | John Provis Charles Darwin Esqre
