From W. S. Dallas   17 March 1868

48 Burton Crescent | W.C.

17 March 1868.

My dear Sir

I got your letter at Taylor’s yesterday & although you seem doubtful on the subject I am really very glad to hear that you have completed your arrangements (so far) with regard to the Translation of Fritz Müller.—1 I have quite enough now on hand for the next six months & will therefore follow your advice & avoid undertaking anything more.—

I will get forward with the Translation as I have time to spare & hope to get it completed before we get F. Müller’s additions.—2

How would something equivalent to

“A lift

FOR DARWIN”

do for the Title page, putting the “lift” or other word small & the “for Darwin” in large type— It would retain the idea of Müller’s Title & at the same give the book an admissible English title, & would be better than putting German words on the title page of a translation—3

I am sure I need not say that I also was highly gratified at making the personal acquaintance of one for whom I have long entertained the greatest respect & admiration,4—or that I am your’s very truly | W. S. Dallas

C. Darwin Esq.

Footnotes

Dallas asked CD to write to him care of the publisher Taylor & Francis while he was in London (see letter from W. S. Dallas, 28 February 1868). CD was arranging to have Dallas translate Für Darwin (F. Müller 1864).
Dallas had recommended that Müller be asked to provide additions and corrections for the translation (see letter to Fritz Müller, 16 March [1868]).
For CD’s views on the translation of the title, see the letter to Fritz Müller, 16 March [1868].
Dallas may have visited CD on 13 March 1868 (see letter from W. S. Dallas, 8 March 1868).

Summary

Will start translating Für Darwin. Suggests it be called "A Lift for Darwin".
