To Thomas Salt   31 January [1853]

Down Farnborough Kent

Jan. 31st

My dear Sir

I am much obliged by your note received yesterday.1

If it lies in your power, I should be much obliged, if you could dispose of the £600 Shrewsbury St. mortgage for me in the course of the next month or two. It consists of two mortgages of 400£ & 200£, but I should not wish to dispose of either separately.2 If necessary I would pay the Transfer.

I will not forget to enquire, should I meet any likely persons, about the Curacy & House3

My dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | Charles Darwin

Mss. Salt & Son

Footnotes

Salt’s letter to CD has not been found.
Robert Waring Darwin had transferred two securities of £200 and £400 of the Trustees of the Shrewsbury Streets, who were responsible for the maintenance of the town’s roads to CD in 1835; CD transferred them to Robert Carden of Shrewsbury in March 1853 (Shrewsbury Archives, SA D3651/B/47/2/30). In his Investment book (Down House MS), pp. 1–2, CD noted that the capital was paid off on 28 March 1853.
The reference has not been identified.

Summary

Asks if Thomas Salt can dispose of the £600 Shrewsbury Street mortgage.
