Mr. L. will meet you here on Tuesday.—2 You had better write direct to him, appointing hour, & address him

We leave home early on Wednesday morning & therefore we cannot ask you to sleep here, & as you seem so busy I daresay it wd be inconvenient for you to do so.3

CD wanted Marshall to design an addition to Down House (see letter to W. C. Marshall, 19 September 1876); Isaac Withers Laslett was a local builder.
The Darwins left Down on Wednesday 4 October 1876, staying at Leith Hill Place, Surrey from 4 to 7 October, and at William Erasmus Darwin’s house in Southampton from 7 to 20 October (see ‘Journal’ (Appendix II)).
