Chemist and physicist. Studied at Edinburgh University; later demonstrator. Lecturer in chemistry, Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, 1869. Jacksonian Professor of natural experimental philosophy, Cambridge, 1875, and Fullerian Professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, London, 1877. Worked on cryogenics. FRS 1877. Knighted, 1904.
