Mathematician and university administrator. Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, 1852; master, 1880. Called to the bar (Lincoln’s Inn), 1855. Mathematical lecturer at Caius from 1856. Ordained priest, 1860. Vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge, 1884–5. FRS 1877.
