John Laird Mair Lawrence, 1st baronet and 1st Baron Lawrence
1811–79
Administrator and diplomat. Joined the East India Company and went to India in 1829. Magistrate, tax collector, and settlement officer in a number of districts, principally Delhi. Member of the administrative board of Punjab, 1849–53; chief commissioner, 1853; first lieutenant-governor, 1859. Negotiated treaties with Afghanistan, 1855 and 1857. Created baronet, 1858. Viceroy of India, 1864–9. Retired to England and was created first Baron Lawrence, 1869. Chaired the national committee protesting against impending war with Afghanistan, 1878. Privy councillor, 1859. Knighted, 1866.
