Mathematician and conveyancer. Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1842–52. Studied law at Lincoln’s Inn; called to the bar, 1849. Practised law until 1863. Honorary fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1872; fellow, 1875. Sadlerian Professor of pure mathematics at Cambridge, 1863–95. FRS 1852.
