Portrait painter and art collector. Painted about 400 portraits of members of the aristocracy and landed gentry, political leaders, Anglican clergy, and popular figures in music and the theatre, mostly in the 1740s and 1750s. Apprentices included Joshua Reynolds and Joseph Wright of Derby.
