Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton
1809–85
Author and politician. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; London University; and in Bonn. Published poetry and prose works. MP for Pontefract, 1837–63. Created first Baron Houghton, 1863. A supporter of factory education and mechanics’ institutes. President of the Statistical Society, 1865–7. Secretary for foreign correspondence of the Royal Academy of Arts, 1878–85. FRS 1868.
