Clergyman and educationalist. BA (senior wrangler), Cambridge (St John’s College), 1839; fellow of St John’s College, 1839–43. Ordained priest, 1842. Curate, St Paul’s, Knightsbridge, 1843. Principal and senior mathematical lecturer, College for Civil Engineers, Putney, 1844–51. Government inspector of schools, 1857–72. Dean of Manchester, 1872–83. Involved in educational causes in Manchester as governor of Manchester grammar school, member of council of Owens College, and supporter of the founding of Manchester High School for Girls.
