Businessman and politician. Partner in a firm of leather, hide, and tallow brokers. Owned iron mines in Norway. Alderman for Lime Street, London, 1866–92. MP for the City of London, 1874–85. Served on a number of governing boards of London hospitals. Defended the interests of the City guilds.
