Archibald Campbell
1805–74
Surgeon and administrator. Assistant surgeon, East India Company, 1827. Superintendent of the Darjeeling station, where he implemented social and economic improvements and developed profitable tea plantations, 1840–62; responsible for political relations between the British and the Sikkim government. Wrote many papers on Himalayan geography. Travelled with Joseph Dalton Hooker in Sikkim in 1849, and was imprisoned with Hooker by the Sikkim rajah.
