John Pascoe Grenfell
1800–69
Naval officer. Served with the East India Company, 1811–19. Lieutenant under Lord Cochrane during the Chilean War of Independence, 1819–23; commander in the Brazilian War of Independence, 1823; rear-admiral, 1841. Commanded the Brazilian navy during the war between Brazil and Argentina, 1851–2; promoted vice-admiral, and then admiral, 1852. Brazilian consul-general in England based in Liverpool, 1846–69.
