German botanist. PhD, Berlin, 1856. Curator at the herbarium of the botanic garden, Saint Petersburg, 1856–9. Lecturer in natural science, agricultural academy, Waldau, 1859–67. Professor of botany and plant diseases, agricultural academy, Bonn-Poppelsdorf, 1868–98; created a garden for economic botany in the botanic garden, Bonn. Co-authored Handbuch des Getreidebaues (Handbook of cereal agriculture; 1885).
