American educator and university president. Graduated from Yale in 1852. Attaché to the American legation at St Petersburg, 1853. Assistant director then director, Yale College Library, 1856–65. Professor of physical geography at Yale’s Sheffield Scientific School, 1863. President, University of California at Berkeley, 1872; Johns Hopkins University, 1875–1901; Carnegie Institution, 1902–4. Known for his promotion of graduate education and original research.
