Gerald William Balfour, 2d earl of Balfour

1853–1945

Politician, classicist, and psychical researcher. Brother of Francis Maitland Balfour and Arthur James Balfour. Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and lecturer in classics, 1878. Conservative MP for Leeds, 1885–1906; chief secretary for Ireland, 1895; president, Board of Trade, 1900. Author of works on psychical phenomena; president of the Society for Psychical Research, 1906. Succeeded Arthur Balfour as earl in 1930.
