Joseph Bullar
1808–69
Physician and author. Born in Southampton, the son of a schoolmaster. Trained as a surgeon in Dorset, 1824–8. Entered St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, 1828. Studied medicine in Paris and Dublin, 1830–2. MD, Edinburgh 1833. In general medical practice in Southampton, 1833–60. With his brother William founded the Royal South Hampshire Infirmary in 1835 and was surgeon there. Physician to the infirmary, 1852–67. Researched and wrote on botanical subjects, and on the relationship of science and Christian belief. First president, Southampton Microscopical Society, 1861.
