John Buchanan

1819–98

Scottish-born botanist and botanical illustrator. Apprenticed to a textile pattern designer, then foreman of a drawing shop. Emigrated to New Zealand on the Columbus in 1849. Took part in the triangulation survey of Otago, New Zealand; botanist and draughtsman to the geological survey of New Zealand. A founder of the New Zealand Institute.
