Ephraim George Squier
1821–88
American journalist and archaeologist. With Edwin Hamilton Davis, excavated prehistoric Indian mounds in Ohio, 1845–7; made archaeological investigations in New York state, 1848. Chargé d’affaires to the Central American states, 1849–51; used his spare time to continue archaeological and ethnological research. Secretary of the Honduras Inter-Oceanic Railway Company, 1853 (the venture was never realised). Chief editor to Frank Leslie’s New York publishing firm, 1857–73. US claims commissioner to Peru, 1863–5. Consul general of Honduras at New York City, 1868.
