Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov
1829–1905
Russian physiologist, chemist, psychologist. Studied medicine at Moscow, 1850–6, then at a number of German universities. Professor, St Petersburg medico-surgical academy, 1860–70; Odessa, 1871–6; St Petersburg, 1876–88; Moscow, 1891–1901. Founded the first Russian school of physiology. Active in the struggle for women’s rights.
