1823–94

German botanist. PhD, Berlin, 1848; privat-dozent, 1851; professor extraordinarius, 1864. Professor and director of the botanic garden, Jena, 1864–9; director, phytophysiological institute, 1865–9. Founding editor, Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Botanik, 1857–94. A founder and president of the German botanical society, 1882–94. Helped establish the biological station at Helgoland. Worked on algal sexuality and later on the function of chlorophyll.
