Army officer and surveyor. Attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Commanded the survey office in British Columbia, 1858–63. Surveyor, Survey of Great Britain, Chatham, 1863–9. Superintendent, Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1869–79. FRS 1870.
