Irish-born politician. Educated at Oxford; Liberal member of parliament for Louth, 1847–74. Chief secretary for Ireland, 1865–6 and 1868–71. President, Board of Trade, 1871–4. Created Baron Carlingford, 1874. Lord privy seal, 1881–5. Succeeded as second Baron Clermont in 1887.
