Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov

1845–1916

Russian zoologist, microbiologist, and pathologist. Worked on comparative physiology in Germany with Rudolf Leuckart and others in the mid-1860s. Professor of zoology and comparative anatomy, University of Odessa, 1872–82. Worked with Louis Pasteur in Paris, from 1888; at the Pasteur Institute, 1888–1916. Founder of comparative pathology. Discovered phagocytes. Awarded the Copley Medal, 1906; Nobel Prize, 1908, for his immunological work (DSB, Williams ed. 1994).
