Matthew Brisbane

b. c. 1787 d. 1833

Scottish sealer-captain and Antarctic explorer. Travelled to Tierra del Fuego, 1823–4, and to Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands, 1824–6, with James Weddell. Shipwrecked on the coast of Tierra del Fuego, 1826 and 1830, and South Georgia, 1829. Worked for the French entrepreneur Louis Vernet on the Falkland Islands; murdered by natives and gauchos.
