George Macleay

1809–91

Traveller and statesman. Went to Australia in 1827 and accompanied Charles Sturt in an exploring expedition down the Murray River. Member of the Legislative Council, 1851–6; Legislative Assembly, 1856–9. Travelled widely in Europe and western Asia from 1859. Knighted, 1875.
