Lauchlan Mackinnon

1817–88

Scottish born pastoralist and newspaper proprietor. Emigrated to Australia in 1838, eventually settling in Port Phillip and winning a seat in the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1848. Became co-proprietor of the Melbourne Argus newspaper in 1852. Retired to England, 1868, but retained an active interest in the Argus, and worked to establish a cable link with London for the paper.
