Ferdinand Marie (Ferdinand) de Lesseps
1805–94
French engineer. Constructed a canal across the Isthmus of Suez, 1859–69; commissioned to attempt a similar project at Panama, 1879–89, but the attempt failed and he was charged with fraud.
