Naturalist and colonial administrator. MD, Edinburgh, 1854. Served as doctor and naturalist on David Livingstone’s second expedition to Zambezi, 1858–63. Vice-consul of Zanzibar, 1866–86. Vice-president and foreign secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. Knighted 1881. FRS 1887.
