James Prescott Joule

Physicist. Studied in Manchester under John Dalton and John Davis. Published works on the mechanical value of heat and conservation of energy. Member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society from 1842; secretary, 1846–50; vice-president, 1850–61; president, intermittently, 1861–82. FRS 1850; Royal Medal, 1852; Copley Medal, 1870.
