Lawyer, judge, and politician. BA, University College, London, 1843. Called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn, 1847; QC and a bencher of Lincoln’s Inn, 1865. Liberal MP for Dover from 1868; solicitor-general from 1869; master of the rolls, 1873. Vice-chancellor, University College, London, 1881–3. FRS 1880.
