Alexander Carl Heinrich Braun

1805–77

German botanist. Professor of botany, Freiburg, 1846–50. Professor of botany and director of the botanic garden, University of Berlin, 1851–77. Brother-in-law of Louis Agassiz. Deeply influenced by Naturphilosophie; studied plant morphology. Established the doctrine of spiral phyllotaxy.
