Naval officer. Entered the Royal Navy, 1857. Lieutenant, 1865; commander, 1878; captain, 1884; rear-admiral, 1899; vice-admiral, 1903; admiral, 1907. Commodore in charge, Hong Kong, 1896. Admiral superintendent of Chatham Dockyard, 1899–1902. Retired in 1908. Fellow, Royal Geographical Society.
