Franz von Hauer
1822–99
Austrian geologist and geographer. Research assistant to Wilhelm von Haidinger and lectured on palaeontology from 1846. Director of the Imperial Geological Institute, 1866–85. Taught at the School for Soil Cultivation from 1874. Head of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, 1885–96.
