1802–76

French chemist. Trained as a pharmacist in Montpellier. Specialised in marine chemistry. Discovered the element bromine; was the first to study and name oxamic acid and amyl alcohol. Professor, Sorbonne, 1842; Collège de France, 1851. Member, Académie des Sciences, 1844.
