Colonial administrator. Stationed in British India from 1834, becoming governor of Bombay in 1862. Returned to England, serving on the Indian Council in London, 1867–76. President, Royal Asiatic Society. President, Royal Geographical Society, 1873–4. Governor of Cape Colony, 1876–80.
