Gaetano Leone (Gaetano) Durando

1811–92

Italian botanist and pharmacist. Studied medicine in Turin; joined the army in 1830. Studied botany at the Sorbonne, Paris, from 1838. Based in Nice and Paris, making many plant-collecting trips in France and Italy, before moving to Algiers in 1850. Explored and collected plants in Algeria. Worked as a hospital pharmacist in Algiers and gave free lectures on botany.
