1811–93

Librarian and writer. Left school at fourteen and worked with his father, a cabinet-maker. In America, 1834–9. Employed as secretary to a music teacher, Joseph Mainzer, whom he accompanied to Edinburgh. Attendant in the library of the Royal Society of London from 1844; assistant secretary to the society, 1861–84. Granted a life pension on retirement. Author of many travel books.
