David Julius Wetterhan

1836–1914

German botanist. Studied banking at his father’s insistence, but maintained a deep interest in botany from an early age and became a supporter of evolution after reading Origin in 1859. Joined the Frankfurt naturalists society, 1861; secretary 1863. Gave a series of public lectures at the Senckenberg Nature Research Society on the natural history of the plant kingdom, 1876. After his father’s death in 1876, sold the family business and moved to Freiburg im Breisgau. Made several research trips and was a founding member of the Baden botanical society. Author of Das Verhältnis der Philosophie zu der empirischen Wissenschaft von der Natur (1894).
