Naturalist. A founder of the Entomological Society of London, 1833. Curator of the Zoological Society of London, 1836–43. Assistant in the mineralogical branch of the natural history department of the British Museum, 1843–50; keeper, mineralogical and geological branch, 1851–6; keeper, geology department, 1857–80. Described CD’s mammalian and entomological specimens from the Beagle voyage.
