James Emerson Tennent (1832–1869)

1804–69

Traveller, politician, and author. Assumed the name Tennent on the death of his father-in-law, William Tennent, in 1832. MP for Belfast, 1832–37, 1838–41, 1842–45. Civil secretary to the colonial government of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 1845–50. Appointed governor of St Helena in 1850, but never assumed office. FRS 1862.
