Ralph Tate
1840–1901
Geologist and botanist. Educated at the Royal School of Mines, London. Taught at the London Polytechnic, and in Bristol and Belfast. Founder of the Belfast Naturalists’ Field Club. Appointed assistant curator at the museum of the Geological Society of London, 1864. Worked on mining prospects in central America and Venezuela. Taught at mining schools in Bristol, Darlington, and Redcar. Elected an associate of the Linnean Society of London, 1867. Appointed to the Elder chair of natural science at the University of Adelaide, 1874. First president of the Royal Society of South Australia.
