Peter Benson Stewart

1808–64

Naval officer. Mate on HMS Beagle, 1831–6. Lieutenant on HMS Alligator, serving off the coast of Australia and the East Indies, 1837–41. His last period of sea duty was as commander in the Coast Guard, 1841–8. Captain, 1857. Government emigration officer in Glasgow, 1861.
