Thomas Smethurst

b. c. 1807 d. 1873

Practised as a surgeon. Author of a work on the water cure, 1843. Proprietor of a hydropathic establishment at Moor Park, 1850–5, which he sold to Edward Wickstead Lane. Accused and acquitted of murdering a woman with whom he had entered into a bigamous relationship, 1859. Imprisoned for bigamy, 1859–60.
