Benjamin Silliman, Jr

1816–85

American chemist. Teaching assistant to his father, Benjamin Silliman, 1837. An editor of the American Journal of Science and Arts, 1838–85. Professor of practical chemistry, Yale University, 1846; succeeded his father as professor of chemistry and natural history in 1853. Professor of chemistry in the medical department, University of Louisville, Kentucky, 1849–54. Consultant to the petroleum and mining industries.
